Research engineer

At the School of Business, Society and Engineering our students are studying to be for example Bachelors or Masters of Engineering, political scientists and business administrators.
Here we have the research specialisations of Industrial Engineering and Management, and Future Energy.
Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

The research environment Future Energy at Mälardalen University (MDH) announce a temporary research engineer/assistant position conducting on of our projects related to energy testbeds and demonstrators (T&Ds).
Future Energy Center is one of the prioritized research environments in the university and conducts research with high scientific excellence.
Situated in the “Energy capital of Sweden” research focus is on high quality scientific results in close co-production with the surrounding society, targeting both high relevance for our industrial partners as well as for public bodies.
We offer a creative, strong and international research environment with a mixture of established and young researchers, with good opportunities to continue to develop individuals, their career and research network, both academic and industry-wise.

MDH has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector.
Most study programmes fall into four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and technology.
With its research, which often takes the form of co-production on the regional, national and global levels, MDH aims to generate useful solutions for societal development.
In 1999, MDH was the world’s first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.

Position description
Within the project World-class Energy Solutions and some related nearby projects we are aiming for the developing a set of tools that will enhance and support evaluation of novel energy components, by modelling and simulation, in order to drive the development of a more intelligent energy systems, higher efficiency and sustainable cities.

The work will include a to explore the selection of a suitable development tools, and starting to implement some key components like models over buildings, households, electric and thermal loads, including local generation (distributed generation) as well as the end-users interconnection to the infrastructure (electric grid, district heating).

The simulations will later be driven by large-scale collected data from several areas in the Västerås region.
Here the work contains statistical analysis as well as physical models.
The research assistant will work together with more senior researchers that also are involved in the project. 

The projects might include collaboration with our some of our partners, both industrial, governmental agencies as well as regional stakeholders (such as cities, regions).

The goals of the position include:

• Benchmarking of modeling tools/framework used for big data;
• Development of some key components;
• Some preliminary validation of the developed methodology

The position is a temporary employment of will last for 2-5 months depending on the number of workings hours that the assistant can work each month.

Qualification requirements
The applicant is required to have at least a BSc degree (or equivalent), but preferable an MSc degree in Energy Engineering, Building Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar.
Competences in modelling and simulation is important (e.g.
Open Modelica, Matlab, Python), as well as knowledge in fundamental knowledge in programming.

The position requires good verbal and written communication skills.
